More and more producers are keen to remake yesteryear hits! Pritish Nandy is remaking SAHIB BIBI AUR GHULAM, RGV is remaking SHOLAY, Farhan Akhtar is remaking DON, J.P. Dutta is making his interpretation of UMRAO JAAN and David Dhawan as well as Ketan Desai are contemplating remaking Manmohan Desai’s blockbuster AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY…
Now, get set for the remake of the Amitabh-Rekha hit GANGA KI SAUGAND, directed by Sultan Ahmed.
The late Sultan Ahmed’s wife Farrah Dibaa Sultan Ahmed is keen on remaking GANGA KI SAUGAND with none other than Abhishek Bachchan essaying the role that Abhishek’s father, Amitabh Bachchan, had portrayed in the 1970s’ hit.
What prompted Farrah to remake her husband’s film? “First and foremost, the new generation may not have watched GANGA KI SAUGAND. It had a strong story as well as a message to convey. Besides, it still ranks amongst Sultan-ji and Amit-ji’s finest works,” she states.
Farrah hasn’t approached Abhishek yet, but she strongly feels that the young Bachchan would more than live up to the challenge if he portrays the role. “Both Amit-ji and Jaya-ji are icons. Not only are they dedicated to their profession, they are wonderful people in real life as well. I see similar qualities in Abhishek. Also, Abhishek will create history if he accepts the role that his father had immortalized in the 1970s,” she states.
Farrah hasn’t approached any director either, but feels that Rajkumar Santoshi would be the ideal choice for the subject. “Sultan-ji always made larger than life movies and I feel Raj-ji possesses the same qualities. The fact that Raj-ji’s name is synonymous with quality cinema has propelled me to approach him,” she enthuses.
